Nature Guided Tour to Marlborough Forest

This is a trip for nature and mushroom lovers. During this time, we expect to find several species of “slippery jacks” or Suillus sp. mushrooms. In forests around Ottawa, there are more than 20 Suillus species. During our trip, we hope to find 5-7 species and learn how to identify different species of these edible mushrooms. We hope to find several other species from Boletes, most part of which are considered edible. Besides, we’ll learn about several other mushroom species, which we can find in this area this time. We also will talk about mushroom collections in different areas. We will meet near Hazeldean Mall at 9:00 am on Saturday, September 10, and drive together to the Marlborough forest area, where we’ll have the opportunity to explore the forest in several places. Mid of September is a time when many kinds of edible mushrooms appear in the forests of Ottawa valley. At the same time, we can find many mushrooms, which are not edible or even poisonous. We will learn to distinguish edible mushrooms from non-edible mushrooms, we will get acquainted with several fairly common poisonous mushrooms. We will find out which species are considered conditionally edible. And also we will learn to distinguish between different groups of fungi: bracket fungi, coral fungi, boletes, agaric mushrooms, morels, hedgehogs, chanterelles, and their relatives. Как одеваться?

В лесу сейчас влажно и прохладно, поэтому позаботьтесь об одежде и обуви, которые наиболее комфортны для перемещения по густому лесу. Лучше одеть яркие курточки или рубашки, чтобы Вас было хорошо видно в лесу. Travel to Quebec-City and Tadoussac in September

We are inviting a few people to join us for a trip to Quebec City and Tadoussac in early September this year. The trip is scheduled from September 2 to September 5 with a 1-night stay in Quebec City and 2-nights in the Tadoussac area. This is a tour to explore nature and to know more about the history and nature of Quebec.

On the first day (September 2), we plan to arrive in Quebec City in the afternoon to explore the historic centre of Old Quebec and walk along its fortified walls. We’ll visit the Dufferin Terrace, Château Frontenac, Place Royal, and other historic sites in the area recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll stay for the night in the area with a waterfront view of the St. Lawrence River.

By the morning of September 3rd, we plan to visit the Montmorency Falls following the path that runs along the cliff’s edge to the suspension bridge at the top of the bridge. After the visit to the falls, we’ll head up to the Tadoussac area (about two hours driving). We’ll stay there for two nights in the small village nearby the Saguenay River and the Park National Fjord-du-Saguenay. We’ll explore this area after arrival and walk in the evening along the shores of the Saguenay Fjord, one of the longest and most southerly fjords in the world.

On September 4th, we plan to make a Zodiac Whale Watching tour. The first whale-watching tour was organized in Tadoussac in 1979. At present, whale-watching tours have been organized from spring to autumn. Only one species – the Beluga whale – lives in the St. Lawrence year round. Other whale species such as humpbacks and fin whales, minke whales and blue whales come to St. Lawrence to feed in summer from May to October. We expect to see some other marine mammals and bird species both from boats and on land.

After whale watching, we’ll have a chance to visit one of the parks in the area including Saguenay – St. Lawrence Marine Park with two land-based observation sites: Islet Point and Rouge Point. We hope to see marine mammals, birds, plants and even fish. We’ll be able also to visit the Pointe-Nore Interpretation and Observation Center to observe confluence phenomena where two rivers meet. We also can walk on one of the trails such as one the Le Fjord Trail, De La Plage Trail, and De L’Estuaire trail with panoramic views of dunes and good places for bird observation. If we’ll have time, we’ll try to visit Parc national des Monts-Valin, which is located not far from Tadoussac. There are many hiking trails in the Park. The trails vary in length and range in difficulty level from easy to difficult.

On September 5th, we’ll have several options from the morning until noon and we’ll decide about the specific site to visit after our whale watching tour and exploring areas around Tadoussac. We are coming back to Ottawa on September 5th afternoon.

What do we need to bring planning a whale watching tour?

For the whale-watching tour we need to have very warm clothes, do not forget to take with you the following items:

Warm sweater
Warm socks, gloves, scarf
Raincoat or warm jacket
Pants
Sunscreen
Sunglasses (ideally polarized for better vision)
Binoculars
Camera (protected from water)

Wilderness First Aid Course offered on August 27 and 28!

CPAWS-OV is proud to offer our staff and volunteer team frequent professional development opportunities. Since many of our team members spend time outdoors and in the field, we are offering a wilderness first aid course for volunteers, program participants, and staff on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 at our Executive Director’s farm in Mayo, Quebec. We have a few spots left! Please consider joining us!

This short, but intensive two-day course is designed to help you deal with situations that may occur while out hiking, paddling, or simply exploring our many parks and protected areas.

This wilderness first aid training prepares you to:

make decisions on whether injuries are serious or not
improvise equipment
provide life-saving treatments
assist those with more training

This fun, hands-on course covers a lot in 2 days:

CPR, AED, and basic life support skills
Major problems with critical body systems such as shock, respiratory problems, and brain injuries
Assessing and splinting bone, muscle, and joint injuries
Spine injury management
Allergies and anaphylaxis
Medical emergencies such as heart problems, asthma, and diabetes
Wound and burn management
Environmental problems such as hypothermia, heat illnesses, lightning, and drowning

The registration fee is $400.00 (including applicable taxes, the two-day course, course manual, and certificate of course completion). The course is given in English.

The course runs from approximately 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on both days, including breaks for lunch and snacks. Material required is minimal and a complete list will be shared with registrants, but expect to need a backpack, water bottle, old or outdoor clothing that can get dirty, and a yoga mat or a sleeping bag to sit on for practical exercises. Please also note that this is a rain or shine course. Some of the best learnings happen when conditions are less than ideal!

Guided Tour for Mushroom Identification

This is a trip for mushroom lovers. We will meet in Ottawa near Dow’s Lake at 8:30 am on Sunday, August 21, and drive through several places at the crown land in Quebec to explore suitable areas for mushroom harvesting. During our guided hike, we’ll learn about various kinds of mushrooms and fungi. And then, we will go to the Constance Bay area, where we will stop at several places where mushroom picking is allowed. Quite a few species of mushrooms have already appeared in these weeks. We hope that with relatively wet weather and relatively low temperatures, their abundance will increase significantly in the coming weeks. We will learn to distinguish edible mushrooms from non-edible mushrooms, we will get acquainted with several fairly common poisonous mushrooms. We will find out which species are considered conditionally edible. And also we will learn to distinguish between different groups of fungi: bracket fungi, coral fungi, boletes, agaric mushrooms, morels, hedgehogs, chanterelles and their relatives. Mud Lake: Britannia Conservation Area in Ottawa

We organize a guided tour to Mud Lake in Ottawa for observation of migratory birds. Mud Lake is a part of the Britannia Conservation Area. This place is a real paradise for birds and birdwatchers. August is a time when many migrant birds fly back from their breeding grounds in the Canadian landscapes to southern areas. At this time you can see many interesting bird species hidden in the crowns of trees, in high bushes or shrub tickets, as well as found in numerous bays of the lake itself in different seasons of the year. At Mud Lake, you can observe not only breeding birds but also many migratory species, the number of which increases incredibly in late spring – and late summer. August is just such a period. At this time, the migratory flows of many songbirds can be observed in the river valleys along their migratory flyways. A significant number of autumn migrants can be spotted at stopover places like Mud Lake. Many of them are very young birds that have only recently left their nests and for the first time fly to distant wintering sites on a long journey together with their parents. Many species, especially small passerine birds, are difficult to identify during this period because many of them change their bright breeding plumage to more modest outfits. However, some waterfowl – such as wood ducks, American wigeons, mallards, and others – already demonstrate the new bright plumages.

Our excursion to this lake is scheduled for August 20 on Saturday at 8:30 am. We’ll meet at Cassels Street near Mud Lake. Latecomers can join us at 9 am before we set foot on the path that takes us under the forest canopy. We will stop at several places along the Ottawa River to watch migratory birds that can be observed in the branches of trees and shrubs. And then we will walk around the lake to look at birds staying near the lake and at other forest inhabitants.

Однако, некоторые водоплавающие – такие как древесная утка – каролинка, американские свиязи или кряквы – встречаются уже в новых ярких брачных нарядах.

Exploring Gatineau nature in August

This guided tour is for those who like to explore new places. We’ll meet in the center of Ottawa near Dow’s Lake at 8:30 am and we’ll go together to the Gatineau area from there. In Gatineau, we’ll visit several areas near Val-des-Bois, including the area adjacent to several lakes and a small waterfall.

В воскресенье возможен дождь, поэтому нужно взять с собой легкие плащики. День будет жарким, желательно одеть легкие рубашки с длинным рукавом для защиты от солнца и комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Не забывайте о воде и легком перекусе, а также возьмите небольшие корзиночки и ножи для поиска грибов. Мы будем в местах с красивыми озерами, где можно будет искупаться, если вы захотите остановиться на озерах для купания, то желательно взять соответствующие принадлежности.

High Lonesome Nature Reserve in summer

Early August is a time when the first bird migrants start to move to the south: ruby-throated hummingbirds are among those migrants. This is also a time when you can observe some tiny amphibians (spring peepers and grey tree-frog) hunting insects from tall perennial plants… If you are interested to see the changes in nature after bird breeding season, join our guided tour to High Lonesome Nature Reserve, located near Pakenham in Ottawa Valley. We also explore summer berries and identify beautiful flowers attracting hummingbirds. Carpooling is welcomed.

Мы организуем поездку для любителей дикой природы в заказник под названием High Lonesome Nature Reserve. Заказник расположен недалеко от городка Пакенхам, в окружении полей и фермерских участков. Он интересен тем, что был создан местными фермерами – семьей Спенсеров, которые передали землю общественной организации – Mississippi- Madawaska Land Trust – в 2012 году. Благодаря усилиям этой организации, а также привлеченных энтузиастов и волонтеров, экосистемы заказника были восстановлены до их первоначального состояния. Mushroom Identification Tour to Gatineau Area

This is travel for those who are interested to know more about mushrooms in Ottawa Valley. We’ll visit the area, which is known as good for mushroom harvest, especially for chanterelles. We’ll meet at 9:00 near St. Malachy Catholic Church, Mayou, QC, and then follow together to the place of our excursion in the private area, where its owner kindly invited us to explore mushrooms that can be found along the trails on his property. The middle of July is a time when the first edible mushrooms appear in forests around We hope to see several species of chanterelles and we’ll try to learn how to identify edible and poisonous species of mushrooms.

Guided Tour to Eagle Nest and around

This is travel for people who like hiking and nature exploration. First, we’ll visit the Eagle Nest area to see the environment from a peak. Later, we’ll visit several areas around that to see plants, flowers, fungi, and mushrooms in the forests around. Eagle’s Nest Lookout is one of the most famous places around the Ottawa area with a beautiful view of lakes and forests. We plan to hike on the Eagles Nest, Skywalk Loop, which is rated as a moderate hike. The length of the loop is 10.1 kilometers. The trail is good for hiking, nature watch, and birdwatching (Excursion will be in Russian).

Поэтому ранний выход – это гарантия того, что мы успеем полюбоваться впечатляющими ландшафтами. Во время похода и после него, мы сможем также оценить ситуацию с урожаем грибов в этом году и обследуем места, где могут уже появиться лисички.

Встреча на парковке перед тропой к обзорной площадке в 9:00 утра 17 июля (воскресенье). Возможен карпулинг из Оттавы (место есть на 2-3 пассажиров).

Сначала мы пройдем до места, известного как “Орлиное гнездо”, которое было и остается священным местом, где совершали обряды местные племена много столетий назад. После мы исследуем окрестные леса, определяя растения, а также грибы. Грибной сезон в окрестностях Оттавы только начинается. Но этот сезон должен быть неплохим, судя по количеству осадков. В конце мы остановимся на пляже на речке Мадаваске – на пляже Burnstown Beach для купания. Рядом с пляжем расположены кабинки для переодевания, а также столы, где можно будет не только отдохнуть, но и перекусить.

В воскресенье ожидается жаркий день. Для похода можно порекомендовать легкие рубашки с длинным рукавом для защиты от комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам, некоторые из которых могут быть крутыми и каменистыми. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Палочка для ходьбы также не помешает на этом маршруте. Не забывайте о купальниках, плавках и полотенцах, так как на обратном пути есть возможность искупаться в чистой и прохладной воде.

Guided Tour to Forêt-la-Blanche Ecological Reserve

Forêt-la-Blanche Ecological Reserve protects an exceptional forest ecosystem in Quebec. It owes stands of mature trees that were not disturbed by human activities. It is also an area with a rich diversity of amphibians, reptiles, birds, insects, plants, and mushrooms. The reserve was established in 2003. It contains 12 km of trails crossing forests and wetlands.

We’ll walk on the wooden trails with fascinating views of the wetlands. At this time of the year, amazing scarlet candles of the Cardinal Plant start to bloom, attracting ruby-throated hummingbirds, specialized to get nectar from their flowers. We can find also several spots with blooming carnivore plants: Northern Pitcher Plant and sundews (Drosera) species which form tight clusters of plants on logs and tiny land islands among the marshes and swamps. We explore what kind of fungi and mushrooms have already appeared in the forest. We also try to find tiny spring peepers and gray tree frogs, hidden under leaves on the forest floor.

We’ll meet at 9:00 am in the small parking lot near the Interpretation Center of the Ecological Reserve in Mayo. We’ll have an opportunity to explore several trails, walk in the forest on several trails, and stop to observe interesting species of plants, insects, amphibians, and birds. Do not forget your cameras!

Dress:

It is expected that the weather on Sunday will be hot. Do not forget water, sunscreen, hats, and other ammunition to prevent overheating. We recommend you also take mosquito spray and a light snack. Light summer shoes good for hiking will be the most appropriate for this excursion.
