Honey Mushroom time (mushroom identification)

This is a guided hike to learn more about fall mushrooms. We’ll find out how to differentiate edible honey mushrooms from several other similar species, some of which can be poisonous. We’ll also know about mushrooms associated with mycorrhiza of honey mushrooms such as Aborted Entoloma or shrimps of the woods.

Honey Mushrooms (Armillaria sp.) were just recently categorized as one species, but now this species is divided into approximately ten different. We’ll look for Armillaria mellea known as Joney Fungus and widely distributed in forests around Ottawa. This mushroom usually appears in early or mid-September and can be found until late October.  These mushrooms are parasites and often colonize the base of trees or stumps. Honey mushrooms can be bioluminescent and may cause a white glow of stumps at night. Honey mushrooms are regarded in many areas as one of the best wild mushrooms.

There are several mushrooms that are similar in appearance but need to be distinguished as they can be deadly poisonous. So, we’ll learn how to distinguish the Deadly Galerina (Galerina autumnalis) and Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare). Besides, we’ll look for Aborted Entoloma or Shrimps of the Woods (Entoloma abortivum), which are also observed in the habitats where honey mushrooms can be found. These are also edible delicious mushrooms, which we’ll learn how to identify.

This is a trip for mushroom lovers. We will meet in Ottawa at the parking lot near Fletcher Garden at 9:00 am on Saturday, September 24, and drive to the areas where we can find Honey Mushrooms and other listed species. We expect to find not only the listed above species but many others as well. This fall is relatively wet and we hope to find many fruiting species, which we’ll be able to identify in the field. We will learn to distinguish edible mushrooms from non-edible mushrooms, we will get acquainted with several fairly common poisonous mushrooms. We will find out how to distinguish between different groups of fungi: bracket fungi, coral fungi, boletes, agaric mushrooms, morels, hedgehogs, chanterelles, and their relatives. Morning Fogs and Sunset at ZEC Dumoine

We invite you to explore nature in early fall at the Dumoine River, the last wild river in Ottawa Valley. Early October is the time when it is still warm and sunny during the day; however, it is already cold at night, and in the morning a milky impenetrable fog covers all the surroundings. This is still a time of late songbird migration and other forest dwellers preparing for the long winter. This is also a period when moisture and morning fogs wake up the mycelium that has been sleeping all summer and many types of mushrooms appear on the surface, surprising forest visitors with various shapes, colors, and abundance.

We are organizing a trip for naturalists, photographers, and nature lovers to explore the magic of first fall colors, silent mornings, and a farewell variety of wildlife. We plan to organize guided hikes near the cabin, located close to the Lac Penniseault for mushroom lovers. It should be many mushroom varieties in this area in fall. We will visit the Grande Chute trail to Robinson Lake. We will have also a canoe trip on Robinson Lake to the Red Pine waterfall. We will stay in the morning on the shelter platform near Steven’s Pond expecting to see moose and other animals. We will have a campfire and we hope to have good company near the cabin in the evening. We have two canoes in the area, which we can share to explore the environment. We also provide simple food and utensils. If you plan to cook some specific things, you can bring them also.

We will have two options to come to the camping site: one by Friday evening (before 5:00 pm) to register at ZEC Dumoine and stay in the area for two nights, and another by early morning Saturday, October 08, to stay in the area for one night. Carpooling is welcomed. How to dress?

It is damp and cool in the forest now, so take care of clothes and shoes that are most comfortable for moving through ravines and inconveniences. Please, take your tents, sleeping bags, and matrasses in according to the weather forecast.

What else might be needed?

You will need lights for the evening, personal items, and light snacks for hikes. Do not forget small baskets and knives for picking mushrooms, as well as personal protection against insects. We have three safety vests in the area, but it is better to take your own safety vest if you plan to use a canoe. Please, let us know also if you have any food preferences.

Nature Guided Tour to Marlborough Forest

This is a trip for nature and mushroom lovers. During this time, we expect to find several species of “slippery jacks” or Suillus sp. mushrooms. In forests around Ottawa, there are more than 20 Suillus species. During our trip, we hope to find 5-7 species and learn how to identify different species of these edible mushrooms. We hope to find several other species from Boletes, most part of which are considered edible. Besides, we’ll learn about several other mushroom species, which we can find in this area this time. We also will talk about mushroom collections in different areas. We will meet near Hazeldean Mall at 9:00 am on Saturday, September 10, and drive together to the Marlborough forest area, where we’ll have the opportunity to explore the forest in several places. Мы встретимся в 9:00 утра в субботу, 10 сентября, на парковке у мола Хазельдин в Канате.  А далее, мы поедем вместе в сторону леса Мальборо, где мы будем останавливаться в нескольких местах. Эта поездка будет тематической. Мы будем учиться искать и различать разные виды маслят. На территории вокруг Оттавы можно найти больше 20 видов маслят. На территории, куда мы поедем сейчас встречается 5-7 видов маслят. Мы поучимся их различать, а также узнаем об их вкусовых свойствах, способах сбора и приготовления. Кроме этого, мы познакомиться с несколькими довольно распространенными ядовитыми видами грибов. Мы узнаем, какие виды считаются условно-съедобными. А также мы будем учиться различать разные группы грибов: трутовики, коралловые грибы, трубчатые и пластинчатые грибы, сморчи и строчки, ежовики, лисички и их родственники. Карпулинг приветствуется. Travel to Dewberry Trail and around

It is expected to rain this Sunday. It is not clear when it will start, but if the morning will be clear we would like to invite nature lovers to visit several places in Ottawa Greenbelt. And first of them is the Dewberry Trail in the eastern corner of Ottawa. Due to the May storm, the trail is still closed for the mass visiting, however, we have been there last weekend and explored the area. The trail is mostly clear, with few trees on the side trails closing the road. We select the safe route in the area to explore wildlife inhabiting the Ottawa Greenbelt.

Place and Subject of the Excursion:

We plan to visit the different types of forest: coniferous, mixed, and deciduous and learn about its dwellers: birds, amphibians, mammals, and insects.  We plan also to explore the diversity of fungi that appear on the trunks of the trees and on the ground.

We’ll meet at 8:30 am at the Parking near Dewberry Trail. We’ll walk along the trail with many stops to observe plants, fungi, birds, and other animals. We’ll watch for the weather, and if it will allow we’ll visit several other places around this area.

Dress:

The forecast is for hot weather this weekend, so, we can expect many mosquitoes after several showers of rain this week. Be prepared to prevent mosquito bites. We suggest you take mosquito spray,  water, and a light snack.

Camping near Dumoine River

Join us for a journey to the Ottawa Valley’s last wild river – the Dumoine! A land of mature and old-growth forests, countless lakes, streams and wetlands – home to moose, bear, wolves, and over 160 species of birds. We are organizing a trip for naturalists, photographers and nature lovers to capture the beauty of this place on Canada Day.

The early summer is an amazing time in the taiga, full of cares and worries about the growing offspring of numerous forest inhabitants, the unique colors of flowering plants, the noise of running waves of a full-flowing river, piercing colorful sunsets and sunrises…

In summer, the taiga comes alive. It is filled with the voices of birds returned from distant wintering places and is colored with the variegation of flowering plants. We invite people open to the beauty or just nature lovers to share with us the unique moments of immersion in the wild nature of this amazing place. Birds returned to their breeding sites and occupied their personal “households”. In this time, they are most visible and heard. We’ll learn how to recognize birds by call and sight. At this time, amphibians are also very vocal; their chorus is more prominent at the dusk – early morning, and evening. We’ll learn how to identify various species of frogs and hope to see some of them during our trips to forests and along the river.

Our trip will take place on the Canada Day from July 1 to July 4. We will stop close to the cabin on the Lac Pinniseault and at a colorful place on the banks of the Dumoine River – close to Robinson Lake. Our team of three people organizes leisure activities and hikes for participants on the territory. We will observe the birds and animals that live in the area, as well as get up early to catch the unique morning light over the river and lake.

We invite a group of 10-15 people for this trip. We can provide transportation for people to the territory, and we also provide guidance on hikes to observe wildlife. We will stay close to John’s cabin, providing you with hot fragrant coffee, and tea at any time. We also will serve a small breakfast for everyone and dinner at the end of the day. We also have a special camouflage tent that can accommodate 4 people to watch birds and other inhabitants of the taiga. We have several equipped places for observation of nature in the Dumoine area, where photographers can stay to observe wildlife and take photos. We have several canoes for observation of nature from the water. We provide basic food, but we advise everyone to take additional food, whatever you like.

You need to bring a tent and camping essentials, flashlights, safety vests for canoe trips, your cameras, and protection against mosquitoes and other insects. Please, watch for the weather forecast and prepare your rain jackets and boots accordingly.

The cost of the trip – $ 150 per full day per person includes – registration, place in the camp, escort, breakfast, and dinner, as well as lessons in nature observation, identifying birds and mammals by voices and footprints.  In addition, we will provide you with transportation to our field camp from Swisha, ​​where you can leave your car, to the base camp, and back. We’ll charge half the price for the day of arrival and the day of departure.

Exploring Fall Mushrooms in Ottawa Valley

Recent rains have awakened the dormant mycelium in many species of fungi. The diversity of mushrooms is so high, that it is easy to make mistakes in their identification. Our next guided hike is organized in the Ottawa area for those who just start to pick up mushrooms and for those who already have some experience of mushroom hunting. We’ll learn how to identify various groups of mushrooms and collect only those of them, which are absolutely safe. We also learn some important lessons regarding areas, where collecting mushrooms is allowed. Participants of our guided hike will know also how to cook some of the most common edible mushrooms. The weather forecast for this weekend is good again for mushroom growing.

Продолжительность экскурсии 4-5 часов, мы обследуем несколько мест поблизости от этой парковки и вокруг в этом огромном лесу. Будем надеяться, что природа будет благосклонна и дождь днем не будет идти. Будем надеяться на удачу, несомненно, что грибы мы найдем, вопрос – какие и сколько… Экскурсия по грибы – это всегда не только сбор, но и исследование природной среды и наблюдения за явлениями в жизни дикой природы.

Mushroom Identification Guided Hike

Many of my friends from the Russian-speaking community are interested in picking up mushrooms in the forests around Ottawa. This hike is for those who are interested in where to pick up mushrooms, what are existing rules and regulations, and basic knowledge of how to identify edible mushrooms. The place for the guided hike will be defined later. The meeting place is in Maoy, near St. Malachy Catholic Church close to the place of guided hike, August 14 at 9:30 am.

В середине августа мы планируем организовать первый поход для любителей грибов. Место, куда мы поедем, будет определено позднее. Все участники встретятся перед поездкой на парковке неподалеку от выезда на хайвей в 9 утра. Возможен карпулинг. В местах, куда мы поедем, грибы собирать разрешается. Поэтому все участники могут приготовить необходимое снаряжение для сбора грибов. Однако, богатый урожай не гарантируется. Грибы в этом году появляются спорадично и встречаются только местами. Тем не менее, к середине августа будет уже довольно большое разнообразие и мы будем учиться различать трубчатые и пластинчатые грибы, сумчатые грибы и трутовики. Мы познакомимся со строением грибов и будем учиться отличать грибы с гладким гименофором (коралловые грибы), шиповидным гименофором (“зубчатые” грибы), трубчатым гименофором (маслята, боровики, моховики, подосиновики) и пластинчатым гименофором (мухоморы, бледные поганки, грузди, сыроежки и многие другие). Мы также познакомимся с разнообразием летних грибов, представленных в наших лесах, и будем учиться не только определять грибы, но и проходить спокойно мимо тех, из них, которые вызывают сомнение.

Форма одежды:

По погоде – удобная одежда и обувь: легкая рубашка с длинным рукавом для защиты от комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Палочка для ходьбы также не помешает на этом маршруте. Не забывайте воду и перекусы.

Exploring Larose Forest in summer (in Russian)

Larose forest covers a huge area of over 11,000 hectares. It has more than 200 km of trails. The area is interesting for various kinds of curious minds to explore this wooded landscape with a diversity of trees. During our guided tour we’ll visit several trails and explore summer flowers, birds, insects, and early mushrooms in various tree communities.

Этот тур организуется для фотографов и любителей природы. Необыкновенная чрезвычайно-влажная погода в этом году предполагает ранний урожай разных грибов. Массив леса Ларос известен тем, что натуралисты Оттавы обнаружили на этой территории более 500 видов представителей одного из богатейших царств дикой природы на нашей планете – царства грибов. Наш летний поход направлен на то, чтобы посмотреть животный и растительный мир, а также, возможно, и некоторые виды ранних грибов, которые могут появиться на этой территории уже в середине июля. Обычно, из-за жары грибы начинают появляться в Оттаве только во второй половине августа – сентябре. Однако, погодная аномалия может изменить природные циклы. Сбор грибов не является целью экскурсии, но мы поучимся узнавать разные группы грибов, пользоваться определителем, а также познакомимся с правилами сбора грибов в Канаде.

Встреча на парковке 1 (maps) в 9 часов утра, 11 июля (воскресенье) – тур может быть продолжительным и закончится в 2-3 часа дня

Перед походом проверьте прогноз погоды. В лесу лучше ходить в легкой рубашке с длинными рукавами, которые предохраняют от комаров. Не забывайте крем от солнца и средства от комаров, а также свои камеры! Также обязательно возьмите воду и бутерброды, чтобы можно было в лесу перекусить.
