Fall Colors in Algonquin Provincial Park

We are looking for some traveling companions for a trip to Algonquin Park from late September to early October. This trip will take place at the peak of autumn colors, which at this time form the unique landscape of the park and attract many visitors who want to see this beauty. We have booked a place for 6 people in the Pog Lake and Kearney Lake Campground from Friday (it’s September 30th) until Sunday (it’s October 2nd). I plan to organize several guided nature watch tours these days to places where there is a high probability of seeing moose,  otters, beavers, as well as birds such as Spruce Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Canada Jay, and late migrants occurring this time in the Algonquin Park – in the mornings and evenings. We will also visit several lookouts to view the beauty of the autumn colors of the park from a height. On Sunday, when we leave the park, we will visit several areas where mushroom picking is allowed on the way home to Ottawa. For the trip you need to have a tent, sleeping bags, and mattresses, although we have extra tents and all other equipment available, so please contact us if you need anything for the trip.

How to dress?

From late September – early October, it can be already fresh or even cold in the park. It is necessary to bring warm clothes for sleeping, as well as for hiking in the morning and evening. Please, prepare also good hiking shoes. It is also advisable to bring your own mugs, spoons, forks, and knives. In the evening you will need flashlights.

What else might be needed?

We bring food and agree on our diet and cooking plans before the trip. We also have other field utensils for cooking. But you can grab a light snack for hiking. Don’t forget your personal insect repellent and sunscreen.

Мы ищем несколько попутчиков для поездки в Алгонкин парк в конце сентября – начале октября. Это поездка состоится в пик осенних красок, которые формируют в это время неповторимый ландшафт парка и привлекают сюда многих посетителей, которые хотят увидеть эту красоту. Мы забронировали место на 6 человек в районе озер Пог и Киарни с пятницы – это сентябрь 30 – до воскресенья – это 2 октября.  Я планирую провести несколько экскурсий в эти дни в места, где высока вероятность увидеть лосей, выдр, бобров, а также птиц – канадскую дикушу и воротничковых рябчиков – по утрам и вечерам. Также мы будем подниматься в места обзора, чтобы увидеть красоту осенних красок парка с высоты. В воскресенье, когда мы выедем из парка, мы посетим несколько мест, где разрешается собирать грибы, на пути домой в Оттаву. Желающих поехать прошу связаться либо через комментарии внизу, либо через мессенджер в Фэйсбуке. Для поездки нужно иметь палатку, спальные мешки и матрасики, хотя у нас есть в наличии и экстра-палатки, и все остальное оборудование, поэтому, обращайтесь, если вам что-то будет нужно для поездки.

Как одеваться?

В конце сентября – начале октября в парке уже прохладно. Необходимо взять с собой теплую одежду для сна, а также для походов утром и вечером. Также желательно взять свои кружки, ложки, вилки и ножи. Вечером понадобятся фонарики.

Что еще может понадобиться?

Мы привозим еду и согласуем наш рацион до поездки. Также у нас есть плитка для готовки и полевая посуда. Но вы можете захватить легкий перекус для походов. Не забывайте средства персональной защиты от насекомых и крем от солнца.

Morning Fogs and Sunset at ZEC Dumoine

We invite you to explore nature in early fall at the Dumoine River, the last wild river in Ottawa Valley. Early October is the time when it is still warm and sunny during the day; however, it is already cold at night, and in the morning a milky impenetrable fog covers all the surroundings. This is still a time of late songbird migration and other forest dwellers preparing for the long winter. This is also a period when moisture and morning fogs wake up the mycelium that has been sleeping all summer and many types of mushrooms appear on the surface, surprising forest visitors with various shapes, colors, and abundance.

We are organizing a trip for naturalists, photographers, and nature lovers to explore the magic of first fall colors, silent mornings, and a farewell variety of wildlife. We plan to organize guided hikes near the cabin, located close to the Lac Penniseault for mushroom lovers. It should be many mushroom varieties in this area in fall. We will visit the Grande Chute trail to Robinson Lake. We will have also a canoe trip on Robinson Lake to the Red Pine waterfall. We will stay in the morning on the shelter platform near Steven’s Pond expecting to see moose and other animals. We will have a campfire and we hope to have good company near the cabin in the evening. We have two canoes in the area, which we can share to explore the environment. We also provide simple food and utensils. If you plan to cook some specific things, you can bring them also.

We will have two options to come to the camping site: one by Friday evening (before 5:00 pm) to register at ZEC Dumoine and stay in the area for two nights, and another by early morning Saturday, October 08, to stay in the area for one night. Carpooling is welcomed. How to dress?

It is damp and cool in the forest now, so take care of clothes and shoes that are most comfortable for moving through ravines and inconveniences. Please, take your tents, sleeping bags, and matrasses in according to the weather forecast.

What else might be needed?

You will need lights for the evening, personal items, and light snacks for hikes. Do not forget small baskets and knives for picking mushrooms, as well as personal protection against insects. We have three safety vests in the area, but it is better to take your own safety vest if you plan to use a canoe. Please, let us know also if you have any food preferences.

High Lonesome Nature Reserve in summer

Early August is a time when the first bird migrants start to move to the south: ruby-throated hummingbirds are among those migrants. This is also a time when you can observe some tiny amphibians (spring peepers and grey tree-frog) hunting insects from tall perennial plants… If you are interested to see the changes in nature after bird breeding season, join our guided tour to High Lonesome Nature Reserve, located near Pakenham in Ottawa Valley. We also explore summer berries and identify beautiful flowers attracting hummingbirds. Carpooling is welcomed.
Мы приглашаем всех желающих на экскурсию в небольшой заказник, расположенный поблизости от городка Пакенхам в долине реки Оттавы – High Lonesome Nature Reserve. Заказник был создан местными фермерами, он представляет из себя очень интересный участок дикой природы, привлекающий много самых разных видов интересных животных. В заказнике много интересных троп, пересекающих разные типы природных экосистем. Мы постараемся пройти по нескольким тропам, чтобы охватить участки леса и водно-болотных угодий.
Место проведения и предмет экскурсии:

Мы организуем поездку для любителей дикой природы в заказник под названием High Lonesome Nature Reserve. Заказник расположен недалеко от городка Пакенхам, в окружении полей и фермерских участков. Он интересен тем, что был создан местными фермерами – семьей Спенсеров, которые передали землю общественной организации – Mississippi- Madawaska Land Trust – в 2012 году.  Благодаря усилиям этой организации, а также привлеченных энтузиастов и волонтеров, экосистемы заказника были восстановлены до их первоначального состояния. В настоящее время – это территория, которую посещают любители природы в самые разные сезоны года.

Мы встретимся перед входом в заказник, где есть место для парковки нескольких автомобилей в 9:30 утра 6 августа (в субботу). Возможен карпулинг из Оттавы (в моей машине место есть на 2-3 пассажиров).

В начале августа начинается миграция многих перелетрных видов птиц. В это время начинается обильный пролет колибри, которые останавливаются в местах с цветочными полянками, а также около водоемов с обильно цветущими водными растениями, поэтому мы сначала пройдем вокруг небольшого озера, чтобы посмотреть, какие пролетные виды птиц уже появились. Мы также пройдем по нескольким лесным тропинкам, чтобы посмотреть лесных обитателей заказника. В это время маленькие древесные лягушки в жаркие дни залезают на кустики высоких многолетних трав. Если нам повезет, то мы сможем увидеть этих симпатичных лягушек охотящимися на насекомых.

Форма одежды:

В субботу ожидается жаркий день. Для похода можно порекомендовать легкие рубашки с длинным рукавом для защиты от солнца и комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Палочка для ходьбы также не помешает на этом маршруте. Не забывайте о воде и легком перекусе.

Guided Tour to Eagle Nest and around

This is travel for people who like hiking and nature exploration. First, we’ll visit the Eagle Nest area to see the environment from a peak. Later, we’ll visit several areas around that to see plants, flowers, fungi, and mushrooms in the forests around. Eagle’s Nest Lookout is one of the most famous places around the Ottawa area with a beautiful view of lakes and forests.  We plan to hike on the Eagles Nest, Skywalk Loop, which is rated as a moderate hike. The length of the loop is 10.1 kilometers. The trail is good for hiking, nature watch, and birdwatching (Excursion will be in Russian).

Это место интересно не только своими чарующими видами ландшафтов и красотой дикой природы, но и тем, что оно представляет одно из святилищ местного коренного народа Алгонкин-Анишинабе. Народ из этого племени приходил на гору, чтобы укрепить духовные силы, получить знак свыше от духа орлов и понять через медитацию, в каком направлении двигаться… Основная тропа к скале небольшая – всего около 3 км, но кроме нее здесь есть и другие маршруты, посещение которых мы обсудим при подготовке к походу. В последнее время рядом с местом обзора построено много разных реcортов и отелей, поток туристов летом довольно большой, что может помешать наблюдению дикой природы. Поэтому ранний выход – это гарантия того, что мы успеем полюбоваться впечатляющими ландшафтами. Во время похода и после него, мы сможем также оценить ситуацию с урожаем грибов в этом году и обследуем места, где могут уже появиться лисички.

Встреча на парковке перед тропой к обзорной площадке в 9:00 утра 17 июля (воскресенье). Возможен карпулинг из Оттавы (место есть на 2-3 пассажиров).

Сначала мы пройдем до места, известного как “Орлиное гнездо”, которое было и остается священным местом, где совершали обряды местные племена много столетий назад. После мы исследуем окрестные леса, определяя растения, а также грибы. Грибной сезон в окрестностях Оттавы только начинается. Но этот сезон должен быть неплохим, судя по количеству осадков. В конце мы остановимся на пляже на речке Мадаваске – на пляже Burnstown Beach для купания. Рядом с пляжем расположены кабинки для переодевания, а также столы, где можно будет не только отдохнуть, но и перекусить.

В воскресенье ожидается жаркий день. Для похода можно порекомендовать легкие рубашки с длинным рукавом для защиты от комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам, некоторые из которых могут быть крутыми и каменистыми. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Палочка для ходьбы также не помешает на этом маршруте. Не забывайте о купальниках, плавках и полотенцах, так как на обратном пути есть возможность искупаться в чистой и прохладной воде.

Amherst Island in early December

The Amherst Island, located near Kingston, is well known as one of the perfect places for birdwatching. We organize our next guided hike to the Island for those who are interested to know more about birds and other wild, creatures inhabiting this area. We’ll take binoculars and scope for observation of waterfowls and other birds.

Place and Subject of the Excursion:

We plan to explore the roads of the Island as follows: Front Rd., South Shore Rd., the Island West End, and the Owl Woods. At this time of the year, we have an opportunity to see many waterfowls (geese and ducks), which stay for winter in unfrozen waters near the island.  We also explore the space around the roads that to spot first Snowy Owls arrived there for wintering. Other species – the Short-eared Owl – often stay on fence posts waiting for mice feeding in the fields. The area is also attractive for many birds of prey such as the Northern Harrier, Rough-Legged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and even Bald Eagle. Many small passerine birds stop for winter on the island, surveying roads and farms for food sources. One of the most interesting places to visit is Owl Woods where several owl species stay in the winter season: some of them as the Northern Saw-Whet Owl and Barred Owl usually stay solitary or in pairs in winter, others as the Long-eared Owl forms flocks gathering in the rusting places. The birders are allowed to visit Owl Woods, following the Code of Conduct, respecting the private property of stewards who owned this land and the “privacy” of wild creatures: no harm to the owls and their habitats is allowed. We stay at the island in the daytime from 11:30 to 5:00 pm that to see how night birds prepare for hunting, perching at the poles located around agricultural fields.

We’ll meet near the Ferry at Millhaven Ferry Dock (mainland side), 5604 Highway 33, Millhaven, ON at 11:15 am on Sunday, December 05. Carpooling from Ottawa to the island is welcomed. We plan to leave Amherst Island at 5:00 pm – after sunset.

Dress:

The weather forecast on Sunday is good with a light frost. Strong wind is not predicted this day that is good for bird observation. It is suggested to have warm jackets, gloves, or mittens. Waterproof shoes will be appropriate to walk to the woods. Take sandwiches and water/ tea or coffee with you. Do not forget your cameras and binoculars!
