Tamarack in fall colors (Mer Bleue and Dewberry Trails)

Usually, needles on coniferous trees do not fall off in autumn. These trees survive the harsh winter season while remaining green. The exception is larch or tamarack, in which soft needles turn bright yellow and fall off in autumn. In winter the trees stand bare, as do the deciduous trees. This is probably due to the adaptation of this tree to the harsh Arctic winters. Tamarack is one of the tree species that has advanced in its distribution far to the north – into the tundra, beyond the Arctic Circle. We can see a piece of tundra in the green belt of Ottawa in the Mer Bleue area. Here at this time, you can also observe sphagnum moss, which turns red. Would you like to learn about the life of this swamp and walk along the paths with us to see how local plant and animal species prepare for winter? Join our hike on Sunday, October 23 at 9 am. We meet at Parking 22 of Ottawa Greenbelt, in the proximity of a boardwalk around the Mer Bleue Bog to see the rich fall colors. After a hike through the swamp, we will still drive to the neighboring trail and take a walk in the forest along the Dewberry path in the forest…

How to dress?

Please, watch the weather forecast to be prepared for a trip. This time you will need gloves, warm jackets, and good shoes that are most comfortable for a trip on the forest paths.

What else might be needed?

We plan to be in an outdoor environment for 3-4 hours. It is better to have a light backpack to hide your clothes if it will become warm during our trip. It is good also to take water and light snacks.

Обычно листья (хвоя) на хвойных деревьях не опадают осенью. Эти деревья переживают суровую зимнюю пору, оставаясь зелеными. Вероятно, это связано с адаптацией этого дерева к суровым арктическим зимам. Лиственница – один из видов деревьев, который продвинулся в своем распространении далеко на север – в тундры, за полярный круг. Кусочек тундры мы можем увидеть в зеленом поясе Оттавы в районе Мер-Бле. Здесь же в это время, можно увидеть и мох сфагнум, который краснеет перед зимой. После похода по болоту мы еще проедем на соседнюю тропу и погуляем в лесу по “Костяничной» тропе…

Как одеваться?

Пожалуйста, следите за прогнозом погоды, чтобы подготовиться к походу. Вам могут понадобиться уже варежки или перчатки, теплые куртки и хорошая обувь, удобная для ходьбы по лесным тропинкам.

Что еще может понадобиться?

Мы планируем находиться на открытом воздухе в течение 3-4 часов. Лучше иметь при себе легкий рюкзак, чтобы положить в него одежду, если во время нашего путешествия станет тепло. Хорошо также взять с собой воду и легкий перекус. Не забывайте также бинокли и фотоаппараты. В это время у нас есть шанс увидеть интересных птиц, обитателей тунды, которые одними из последних пролетают через наши широты.

Morning Fogs and Sunset at ZEC Dumoine

We invite you to explore nature in early fall at the Dumoine River, the last wild river in Ottawa Valley. Early October is the time when it is still warm and sunny during the day; however, it is already cold at night, and in the morning a milky impenetrable fog covers all the surroundings. This is still a time of late songbird migration and other forest dwellers preparing for the long winter. This is also a period when moisture and morning fogs wake up the mycelium that has been sleeping all summer and many types of mushrooms appear on the surface, surprising forest visitors with various shapes, colors, and abundance.

We are organizing a trip for naturalists, photographers, and nature lovers to explore the magic of first fall colors, silent mornings, and a farewell variety of wildlife. We plan to organize guided hikes near the cabin, located close to the Lac Penniseault for mushroom lovers. It should be many mushroom varieties in this area in fall. We will visit the Grande Chute trail to Robinson Lake. We will have also a canoe trip on Robinson Lake to the Red Pine waterfall. We will stay in the morning on the shelter platform near Steven’s Pond expecting to see moose and other animals. We will have a campfire and we hope to have good company near the cabin in the evening. We have two canoes in the area, which we can share to explore the environment. We also provide simple food and utensils. If you plan to cook some specific things, you can bring them also.

We will have two options to come to the camping site: one by Friday evening (before 5:00 pm) to register at ZEC Dumoine and stay in the area for two nights, and another by early morning Saturday, October 08, to stay in the area for one night. Carpooling is welcomed. How to dress?

It is damp and cool in the forest now, so take care of clothes and shoes that are most comfortable for moving through ravines and inconveniences. Please, take your tents, sleeping bags, and matrasses in according to the weather forecast.

What else might be needed?

You will need lights for the evening, personal items, and light snacks for hikes. Do not forget small baskets and knives for picking mushrooms, as well as personal protection against insects. We have three safety vests in the area, but it is better to take your own safety vest if you plan to use a canoe. Please, let us know also if you have any food preferences.

Exploring Gatineau nature in August

This guided tour is for those who like to explore new places. We’ll meet in the center of Ottawa near Dow’s Lake at 8:30 am and we’ll go together to the Gatineau area from there. In Gatineau, we’ll visit several areas near Val-des-Bois, including the area adjacent to several lakes and a small waterfall.
Мы встретимся в центре Оттавы около Dow’s Lake Parking в 8:30 утра (в воскресенье) и поедем отсюда вместе на Квебекскую сторону – в район местечка Вал-де-Буа, где мы посетим несколько лесных мест. Цель нашей поездки – оценить начало грибного сезона в этом году, а также посмотреть новые места для возможных будущих путешествий. В окрестностях местечка, куда мы едем – много озер, водопады, а также много разных кемпингов, мест для рыбалки и отдыха. Мы остановимся в нескольких точках, чтобы исследовать разные типы мест обитания, посмотреть флору и фауну, пройтись по лесу в поисках грибов и ягод. Для этой поездки лучше будет поехать небольшой кампанией на 2-3 машинах, желательно устроить карпулинг. В моей машине будет место для 2 пассажиров.

Что надо взять с собой? 

В воскресенье возможен дождь, поэтому нужно взять с собой легкие плащики. День будет жарким, желательно одеть легкие рубашки с длинным рукавом для защиты от солнца и комаров. Обувь – легкая и надежная для ходьбы по тропинкам. С собой нужно взять крем от солнца, а также спрей от насекомых. Не забывайте о воде и легком перекусе, а также возьмите небольшие корзиночки и ножи для поиска грибов. Мы будем в местах с красивыми озерами, где можно будет искупаться, если вы захотите остановиться на озерах для купания, то желательно взять соответствующие принадлежности.
